To Russia with Hope

August 11, 2016

It was after 11pm California time.. (PST) ... my cell phone rang an unfamiliar tone, that of perhaps FaceTime. Turns out it was an internet call from Russia.  Just a few weeks earlier I had interviewed on-camera David Arnold.  It was Dave calling from Moscow.  The excitement in his voice was contagious!  He was about to undergo another treatment in hopes of stopping the progression of his MS.  Dave had already described to me in depth his illness, insurance appeals process, and his hopes for a cure.  What I found so astonishing was Dave's attitude and inspiration.  In fact, that very week he had posted something to FB that brought a tear to my eye: I want to inspire people.  I want someone to look at me and say "because of you, I didn't give up."

Multiple sclerosis experts are welcoming this groundbreaking treatment that shows promise for some people with the disease.  It uses harvested stem cells to reset patients' immune systems and reverse some of the symptoms of MS.  The treatment is called autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT).  Two hospitals in Chicago and Seattle offer it, and so does a medical center in Moscow, Russia.  MS charities say stem cell therapy isn't right for all people with the condition.  I am not a doctor.  I am not a researcher.  I am here to share with you the passion of one southern California family in hopes of helping their loved one.  Dave Arnold's story of determination, grit, perseverance, and inspiration is truly an example of the American Spirit.  Stay tuned...
