This isn't a cancer story. This is a mothers love story with some cancer thrown in.
TJ was born September 24, 1998. I didn't have the privilege of knowing TJ but all who did know him describe a happy, athletic, fun, and loving young man with a great smile and amazing courage. Just before his 14th birthday TJ was diagnosed with brain cancer. His mom Diane described the news as a "brick to the head", the kind of shock that doesn't wear off too easily. For the next four and a half years TJ, Diane, and her husband Larry- TJ's father- maneuvered the very difficult road of cancer. They searched for the best doctors, hospitals, the latest therapies, and trials. They lived everyday to the fullest. On September 20, 2007 the monster known as cancer took TJ away from his family and friends. Diane promised herself and her son she would spend the rest of her days on earth making him proud by working to prevent another family from suffering such tremendous loss. She and Larry founded "TJ's Dream Team- HEAD-ing for a Cure." Even in death, TJ is making a difference in the lives of others. Through the non-profit organization that bears his name, funds are raised for research. We had the honor of accompanying Diane & Larry to City of Hope medical center when they presented a $5,000 check to doctors for brain cancer research. What's so cool is that Diane & Larry chose to fight cancer with comedy. Their biggest fundraiser of the year is an evening full of laughter and smiles--just what TJ would have wanted. Each May they fill the house at The Comedy Store in Hollywood, 100% of the proceeds go to TJ's Dream Team. In the fall, there is a musical celebration to again raise money for cancer research. A mother's love is contagious and compassionate. Share the love with others. Check out TJ's Dream Team on Facebook and the Web. www.tjsdreamteam.org
